In Izmir too, the local people were kindly and I, with two shipmates, was invited to share in a jolly wedding celebration being held in a large garden. There we made the acquaintance of a delightful lady, Mübeccel, about 20 years of age, who was learning English. She held an important position in a local bank but kindly offered to meet us the next day and show us the sights of her fascinating town. My colleagues were unable to get ashore again so I had Mübeccel all to myself. I could scarcely believe my good fortune. She graciously showed me around the bazaars, city sights and local countryside. How sad that these naval cruises were of such short duration! It would have been so good to meet that young lady again.
