HMS Manxman at Port Said, November 1956.
< Mike Salts aboard HMS Theseus (initial training)
< During foot patrols with the Wiltshire Regiment in Cyprus. Civil unrest there was rife at the time of our service in the Med. I remember attending a church service (armed with a .303 rifle). But we enjoyed visits to some fascinating places on the island - Troodos Mountains, Bellapais Abey, St Hilarian Castle and Kyrenia Castle.
< Some views of village life in Malta. Mike Rippon and I climbed to the top of Mosta Dome (one of the largest unsupported domes in the world, I believe.) This place of worship was hit by a bomb during the 2nd World War but the bomb did not explode. The shadow of the Dome can be seen in the lowest picture of the group.
The old lady with her goats made a lovely snapshot. She kindly stood for me to take the picture.
Below - An old man ploughing a field. Note: bare feet and wooden plough! That was in 1956 or 57.(And we thought our life was hard! )
Also the Goatherd - a boy of about 9 or 10 - also with bare feet (not uncommon at that time).
